Coca-Cola was invented by John Stith Pemberton, an American pharmacist, in 1886. Pemberton, who lived in Atlanta, Georgia, originally created the drink as a medicinal tonic. He was looking for an alternative to morphine, to which he had become addicted after being wounded in the American Civil War.
