Cycling that expensive other than buying an expensive bike at first? Genuinely curious. Snowboarding seems like it’s $200/day at most places now on top of gear

Yeah, mainly the bike. And some essentials like a helmet or gloves, bibs...depending on where/what you ride. Bike doesn't have to be expensive. But at least decent imo. That's a bit of an investment.
