jack conte (creator of patreon) lamenting FYP algorithms and acting weirdly nostalgic about web 2.0?? feels like a middleman getting mad at a new middleman

he's been spreading stuff like this for a while, it feels like a way to put patreon back in the fold as a counter-culture alternative but it falls flat for me

I think it's a slight over-romanticization of the past and an exaggeration of the current situation. I think he overindexes on TikTok, which does have weaker creator-fan bonds but much stronger discovery. YouTube did and still allows creators to get good discovery and build deeper bonds IMO

I'm also slightly biased / jaded because he has been talking about it for a while but Patreon doesn't seem to be actually adapting to this new era as well?

yeah that's fair. On a related note how do you think about patreon vs something like zora or rodeo? still having a hard time seeing why people would pay for mints but maybe it's essentially onchain patreon, and people do it to support artists?
