Don't start a sentence with "You need to". Ever. Whether speaking with family, friends, or strangers, telling someone what they "need" to do is the worst way to convince a person to do something. Even if you have good reasons for believing they need to do ______, better to offer reasons to decide that for themselves.

Excellent advise. Have you ever read non-violent communication? It's essentially this in a tactful format. Highly recommend.
