Life lessons I've learned from chess.

I just started learning chess this year and realizing it's full of interesting lessons.

Here's my running list:

- have a plan for where you are going. Don’t simply react. When you think there are no moves, take a step back and look again at the bigger picture

- it’s better to retreat sometimes. If you do it, do it the whole way to give yourself enough room to maneuver for the future and not have to take another step back because you didn’t retreat enough

- advantages are ephemeral. You can gain or lose advantage each turn. Just because you were doing well doesn’t mean you can rest on your laurels

- there is no room for ego. Everything is strategic. Retreating is a tactic. Advancing is a tactic.

- opponents make mistakes. It is a mistake to not exploit them to your advantage.
