Under her leadership, the restaurant became renowned not only for its delicious Creole dishes but also as a safe haven and meeting place for civil rights activists during the 1960s. Leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Thurgood Marshall would often meet at Dooky Chase's to strategize and discuss plans for the movement.
