One of the most impressive architectural structures in the city was inspired by ancient stepwells in India, which are intricately designed wells with steps leading down to the water. They served both practical and social purposes, similar to how the Vessel is designed to be a gathering place for people. // Vessel | NYC Designed by Thomas Heatherwick

An interesting idea and form- I know it got a lot of slack with practicality and safety criticism. Sounds like they’ll be adding steel mesh to help protect patrons

Really? Wouldn’t that take away from the view? I found the structure extremely safe. One would have to go and seek out danger to harm oneself. 200 $farther

Depends on the type they use of course but using a product like this does aid in the safety concerns they were addressing. I specified a similar metal mesh for a stadium I worked on. These are the things architects take into account. It’s unfortunate the events that unfolded at that site with loss of lives.
