Network states don’t sit right with me

~7 months ago at EDCON I was listening to @balajis.eth speak about network states in Montenegro.

A few decades ago, there was a civil war in the balkans because some people wanted their own “network” states.

I found the topic incredibly insensitive and tone deaf.

I think there’s an interesting conversation to be had here about the implications of network states and the responses from various actors they can provoke

If a serious attempt at this happened again anywhere in the current day and age, I suspect the outcome would unfortunately be very similar.

This is an interesting question, taken lightly (naively  ?) by Balaji. 
Wanting to make secession from a country’s land won’t happen smoothly. 
I prefer to imagine “layer 2” network nations that are complementary to nation states…
