Good morning Art Lovers ☕️ 🧵👇 1/ Today will be about the first silent disco. The "dancing plague" - this is how a peculiar phenomenon is defined today - each time it affected from several dozen to even several hundred people in the Middle Ages. The sick suddenly and unconsciously began to dance. They danced for hours without rest until they finally passed out. When they returned to each other, they immediately began twitching again. And so on for many days, and sometimes even weeks…

2/ The church, of course, held that the dancers were either possessed by the devil or cursed. In Italy, on the other hand, it was believed that the dancing plague was caused by a spider bite and thus the body got rid of the poison. So we have the first mention of spidermania 😜 More modern interpretations suggest that the toxin produced by the rye growing fungus was the cause. Ergot poisoning can cause cramps, delusions and hallucinations due to its psychoactive chemicals. Some people note, however, that rye was not eaten in all regions affected by choreomania. Plus, bouts of madness didn't always happen during the rainy season, when mushrooms can thrive.
