The painting by Joseph Désiré Court from 1826 depicts a man attempting to save an elderly person, who is believed to symbolize religion and bigotry, during the Great Flood, which is thought to be the Biblical Flood of Noah. In the painting, the elderly man, who is on the verge of drowning, is considered to be the father of the man who must make a choice during the flood. The man’s choice to save his father instead of his child is seen as an allegory for clinging to the past.
