I want everyone to know that web3 companies being cool with casual racism is a nonstarter for future growth. If we want the industry to be global and permissionless, top companies need to be culturally competent enough to deal with xenophobia, anti-blackness, and racism. There have been numerous examples of this recently. Online space does not map to how most people feel and online space is how people vet companies. So the perceptions we build here matter to this industries future. Leaders need to take note of this. While DEI is not a perfect framework, web3/crypto needs to think about how we are cultivating the industry: what personas we are welcoming in and what personas are we excluding. The chain is permissionless, but that does not mean we have to stand behind every action onchain. As a Black person in the industry, I am willing to push to improve this space since I understand how critical this tech is. Not everyone will be as gracious, nor should we expect them to be.
