A conventional product wisdom is
1. Identify journeys that your current power users took to become loyal
2. Create nudges etc. to get new users to take the same journey ( for e.g. make 10 friends, save first design etc.) in hopes they become power users.

A friend recently debated it won't work for a market place offering like Amazon (where the real value is in the inventory listed & not the amazon app itself).

Focusing on user journeys to drive loyalty works well for some products, but may not be as effective for marketplace platforms like Amazon where the value lies in the inventory. Different strategies are needed for different types of products.
