In the past, the RSV vaccine attempts with "inactivated whole particle vaccines" didn't go well, and the reasons remain somewhat unclear, partly because it happened back in the 1960s. But what's leading to today's successes is the identification of mutations that stabilize pre-fusion, similar to what's used in the mRNA COVID vaccines for producing effective neutralizing antibodies.
