The warrior-king Alexander the Great was defeated by the Indian king Porus at the Battle of the Hydaspes. Instead of executing Porus, Alexander was so impressed by his bravery that he made him an ally and friend. Respect and admiration for a worthy opponent, even at war, can lead to unexpected and powerful alliances.
