This quote is from fragments by Parmenides of Elea, a presocratic philosopher. I was reading an essay of Francesca Rigotti about darkness and she quotes him when talking about light/darkness dichotomy. Since Barbarians is about dichotomies, I thought it would fit nicely. :)
