We're raising our son trilingual (English, Japanese, Mandarin), living in Okinawa, Japan. My wife and I speak Japanese and English with each other, 2yo speaks Japanese at daycare, English with me, and Mandarin with Mom and Grandma. Definitely took longer than other kids to start, but It somehow seems to be working.

Starting so early is fundamental. My kids are trilingual too (Japanese, English, Italian) but we spent some years in Italy to increase the confidence. He will thank you once he grows up πŸ™ŒπŸ»

English at school (international school) When we live in Italy we spoke Japanese at home. When we stay in Japan we speak Italian at home. Fortunately my wife can speak Italian and I can speak Japanese. They grew up like that.
