Think this is probably true. I read somewhere the view that the US is abdicating its role as the world’s leader, rather than being forced from it. It’s odd though, because there is much talk about containing China, but the actions are not this at all, they are more about withdrawing to distinct spheres of influence. But there will be trouble because China also has aspirations to dominate the Pacific, and the US wants to minimise Sino influences on South America.

This seems about right. To me, it looks like a deliberate choice to no longer spend money on the security of others. Which is in itself a choice a country can make. But it will inevitably lead to a weakened position for the US. I think that is also why they love to bash Europe so much. Dividing the world between US and China might seem 'controlable' from a certain standpoint, but a strong, united Europe will not help with that. That is an economic force to reckon with. India might be the key, as they seem overlooked and a sleeping giant.
