It sounds like there was a technical hiccup during the upgrade. Often in software updates, certain parameters or algorithms might unintentionally adjust user settings. Looking into the system logs or update notes may provide insight into how followers became members.

If the users cast had appeared on the main feed in last 60 days. Something like this
