How did wedding registries work pre-web2? Did guests just bring/send whatever they thought would be a good gift? Any boomers on here that can enlighten the rest of us?

Back in the day the woman would make an appointment at whatever mid-high end department store in their area with a "planner". They would one on one browse various departments and different items she would need to make her new home and a list of items was compiled in their names. On the engagement announcement that would then be hand mailed it would be listed where the couple is registered. The attendee would go to the store, give their names and an associate would walk them through what wasnt already purchased.

My parents (descendants of Italy and Germany) got married in 1969 in Argentina, with a small ceremony. The gifts mostly consisted of items that were already in the family, some handmade, and from wealthier relatives, a gold coin (they were called "Mexicanos"). My parents are no longer alive, but I still have one of their wedding gifts: this Italian chest, brought to America from Italy by my great-grandmother

You registered at a store and told everyone where you were registered and all the stores of that type had the registry information. You don’t even have to be a boomer to know this. Though I admittedly am Gen X, I will cut you if you call me boomer.
