ie, expecting high returns on investments in short periods of time prevents society from growing

Why would old men not plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit?

Is it simply not wanting others to have what they themselves cannot?

Or perhaps there's not enough reliable trust in society to assure that the tree will remain there for any amount of time?

Long term investment can't happen under volatile and low quality trust conditions.

Trust is a big factor, and related is solidarity.  Why should I go without when everyone else is maxing out?  Why should I do anything for a society which doesn’t do anything for me?

It’s why wealth inequality is an important metric.
