hot take: due diligence > impact metrics grant giving orgs need to spend resources to send experts out to check on projects. do they have what they need to succeed? are they doing what they said they were going to do? if not, do they have a good reason why? can we provide any other meaningful support?

Everyone thinks metrics are a silver bullet for grant programs, but they are less useful in early stage teams solving uncertain problems, which is exactly where grant programs sit. Agree that the solution is more hands-on time - but grant programs in this space rarely want to spend money on it.

i think they're afraid of adding bureaucracy too. but, that excuse means lotsa volunteers :/
