The core idea of Ethereum was proposed in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin. He believed that Bitcoin, despite its success, lacked the capabilities needed to support smart contracts. After publishing the whitepaper, Ethereum was launched with funding from a crowdfunding campaign in 2014. Its mainnet went live in July 2015 and has since become one of the most important blockchain projects.
