International Women’s Day is not really celebrated in the US because of its association with socialist parties and the Soviet Union. I first learned how big a deal it is in the rest of the world when my gf got freeleech for the day on a Russian torrent tracker.

thoughts from russia: - tradition (as an extra day off here, it's an opportunity to pay attention to fam for those ppl who can't dedicate themselves fully to loved ones on work days - and i recall it had this nice holiday vibe back when i was a kid). more of a family holiday, although one would also say nice words to colleagues/or other girls you'd interact during the day - businesses need to sell flowers etc - which is the past 20 years becomes a factor that weighs more in emphasizing the significance of it -> many girls are accustomed to waiting for presents, hence you run into guys with tulips everywhere - also there's a layer of feminist women, who shout about women right on the media - kinda drawing attention to the origins of the holiday, but they usually are β€œvery liberal” in a sense that it's hard to take any of their ideas seriously. tl;dr no one mostly remembers the origins, and for normal ppl (both women or men) it's just a day for nice signs of attention towards their mothers/gfs/frens
