For over 200 years, a family in Venice, Italy, tragically inherited a fatal insomnia that claimed the lives of dozens of family members across multiple generations, with up to six or seven children from a single generation of 14 reportedly passing from the condition.

Fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is a rare genetic brain disorder that progressively disrupts sleep, beginning gradually and worsening over time. 

It leads to total insomnia (agrypnia excitata), often accompanied by speech and coordination issues, as well as dementia. 

The condition is fatal within months to a few years, with no known cure.
