Morris Hirshfield - Stage Beauties, 1944 

Hirshfield spent his life making women's coats and slippers. When he retired due to health reasons at the age of 63 in 1935, he started painting. He became one of the most successful self-taught artists in the USA: by 1942, André Breton invited him to participate in the "First Papers of Surrealism" exhibition, and in 1943, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) held his solo exhibition.
