Albert Camus (November 7, 1913 – January 4, 1960) was a French writer and philosopher, a key figure in "absurd philosophy." He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957 and was considered an existentialist until the 1950s, despite his own denials. After publishing "The Rebel" in 1951, he engaged in a year-long debate with Sartre, ultimately leading to a split. His major works include "The Stranger" and "The Plague." In "The Plague," Camus portrays not just an epidemic, but seeks to represent other forms of confinement and states of unfreedom.
