Betty Smith (December 15, 1896 - January 17, 1972) is an American novelist and screenwriter. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Betty Smith is a descendant of German immigrants. She grew up in poverty in Brooklyn, an experience that provided the framework for her debut novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Other major works include A Better Tomorrow, Morning Joy, and Maggie, Now.
