just finished Reshaping Anthropology: A View from Japan by Shinji Yamashita. What really stuck with me was how Japanese anthropology, during its imperial expansion, often reproduced an orientalist gaze toward neighboring cultures. Beyond the case of Japan, the writing makes a powerful call: to imagine a global forum for anthropology, one that allows us to rethink the relationships between center and periphery, and builds a more honest bridges across them. It left me thinking about the kind of anthropology we need, one rooted in the global-local intersection, open to complexity, and ready to navigate and make sense of an increasingly entangled world.
