Growing up, I was never allowed to try new things in case I failed. My parents had very narrow expectations of me and my abilities, so I was steered towards art because I was 'good' at it. I was discouraged from pursuing other interests like math, writing, or sports. This kind of thinking has stayed with me and I still struggle with it. I ended up becoming a therapist, probably because I've spent my whole life mediating for my family. It's a shame I never got to explore other options.
