So what's next for MEV smoothing pools? I'd kinda maybe like to be able to allocate a *percentage* of any block rewards to the pool and, in turn, receive/claim a proportional percentage of the pool's rewards.

Yea I feel ya. If you have have multiple validators, you can opt in with some and leave others out. It's no more rational, but preserves some of the fun.

I think pools should explore allowing users to set a percentage per validator that they want to contribute/receive.

That’s a great point — had forgotten about them.

I’m still torn between playing the MEV lottery for that chance of a life-changing reward vs securing a steady revenue via smoothing.

Of course, I know the lottery block will never come until right after I switch to smoothing
