Sargon of Akkad (c. 2334–2279 BCE) Sargon is often considered the first king in the sense of unifying a large region under one ruler. He founded the Akkadian Empire in Mesopotamia, which is widely regarded as one of the first empires in history. He conquered Sumerian city-states and established a centralized government.
