The “Carol of the Bells” 🔔 is a captivating and universally cherished holiday tune, but many may not know that its roots are deeply Ukrainian🇺🇦 Originally composed in 1916 by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, the piece was titled “Shchedryk” and was based on an ancient Ukrainian folk chant celebrating the arrival of spring. The word “Shchedryk” translates to “bountiful” or “generous,” reflecting the hopeful themes of the original lyrics about a swallow bringing tidings of prosperity to a household. The melody gained international recognition when it was adapted with new English lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky in the 1930s, transforming it into the festive “Carol of the Bells” we know today. Enjoy listening Shchedryk / Щедрик. Carol of the Bells. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqeJ38DThVc&authuser=0
