Thinking about my FIL RIP. He was a pretty interesting entrepreneur. Grew up poor. Went to jail. Never finished high school. Joined the army. Learned to cut hair there for extra spending money. Went on to create regional top end salons & a line of hair products. He died 6 years ago. We ran the business until a year ago (55 years total) & now are selling off the last bits. Bitter sweet. Had hopped to keep it going for grand kids to run but family ownership is challenging. Learned a massive amount about business from him. But the #1 lesson I took from him was, never own a lawn mower unless you want to use it. I’ve never owned a lawnmower. cc @cameron

Lawnmowers are one of those things that reminds me how nice irl communities can be in the context of mutual aid. Like really, 1 lawnmower could probably serve 12 neighbors or so. We are so individualistic, it never occurs to us to coordinate and share our rarely used high ticket items like lawnmowers etc. But also, my landscapers became good friends over the years so… I think I would have loved your FIL. Thanks for sharing

That’s a great observation about lawnmower sharing. I’m not a ‘tools guy’ so I end up borrowing a lot from neighbors who are often more than a little excited to help. Can I borrow your chainsaw? Hello yeah. I’ll show you how it works. I do almost none of the cutting 🤣 Women loved my FIL he was very talented & ran in that jet setter fashion community of the 70s. They treated him like a celebrity when he walked the floor.
