There are 1.2m members of r/ama. Now imagine if you had forced 10 moderators to manually invite every member. That's 2000 hours of labor at 1 minute per invite. It could even take longer if mods are supposed to subjectively decide if you're a bot or not.

This isn't even a big subreddit, r/funny has 64m members which would take each mod 106,666 man hours to invite everyone.
