8 million souls were lost due to hunger and starvation as a result of Stalin's policies. - Stalin forcefully took control of farmers’ lands and killed thousands of those who opposed him in an effort to increase agricultural output. - His policies led to the 1930s famine that plagued the Soviet Union, severely worsening the situation. It is estimated that 13 percent of the population in Ukraine perished from famine. - Farmers were unable to eat the food they produced unless they met specific quotas to send to the state. Millions died in these rural areas from starvation and severe working conditions.
