Enrico Fermi was a member of the Italian Academy of Sciences. Its meetings were held in the palace and were always extremely lavish.
Late for one of the meetings, Fermi drove up to the palace in his small Fiat. He looked quite unprofessorial, had a rather shabby look, was without the proper robe and triangle. Fermi decided to still try to get into the palace. Obstructing his way carabinieri he introduced himself as “chauffeur of His Excellency Professor Fermi”. All was well.
