Although these paintings themselves are not among the most famous, they eventually became famous in Mussorgsky's Modest Suite titled Pictures at an Exhibition. It was only after Hartmann's death in 1873 that an exhibition of his works was held, and Mussorgsky composed his piece (composed for piano) inspired by the exhibition tour of these paintings. This piece was later written for orchestra by Maurice Ravel, and this version is what most audiences know today.
