now that Google, Meta, Mistral, etc, all have great open source models, it seems rather untenable for OpenAI to 1. keep "open" in the name, 2. stay closed source, 3. pretend to be a non-profit at least one of those things must go, right?

Also Google, Mistral and Meta have models which they did not release as open-source. From OpenAI we got, besides other releases, Whisper (speech2txt) as open-source. Nevertheless, I would love more open models and especially an LLM from them. Like from Meta and now, with Gemma, also Google.

I believe OpenAI, Google and Meta (Mistral) all have closed source and open source LLMs. I don't really see a difference other than I don't think Meta has a paid version of their publicly a available Chatbots and Productivity tools.
