The first woman to travel in space was Soviet cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova. On 16 June 1963, Tereshkova was launched on a solo mission aboard the spacecraft Vostok 6. She spent nearly 70 hours orbiting the Earth, two years after Yuri Gagarin’s first human-crewed flight in space. Tereshkova was born on 6 March 1937
