Gregor Mendel Gregor Mendel was an Austrian priest (born July 20, 1822 - died January 6, 1884) who is known as the father of modern genetics because of his research on the inheritance of genetic traits in plants. In 1865, Gregor Mendel was able to identify the laws governing the transmission of hereditary traits, which was the result of his experiments on the pea plant.
