The exercise goes like this:

Pick a well-lit 3/4 or frontal portrait as a reference.
Draw it as accurately as possible in 1 hour, including shading and values.

Then, hide your drawing & reference and redraw from memory at decreasing time intervals: 30min, 15min, 8min, 4min, 2min, 1min, 30sec.
