i am not LEAVING leaving australia until next year but i am starting to look at things and assess how much i will miss them or whether i will have to miss them at all, eg living in a metropolitan area that’s also an hour away from being able to see the milky way

like i know intellectually that stars are very geography-dependent but it still blows my mind; it’s hard to consistently/actively engage with the idea that the universe is that huge — it’s vital context but day to day i feel like i have to hold that awareness in a different part of my mind to stay human/sane

like dunbar’s number but for the number of stars in your personal universe — what are your ‘pointer stars’? how does your brain like to put dots together? out of a bajillion dots in the sky which ones do your eyes choose? mine are antares (red star, scorpius), southern cross, orion’s belt, menkent (centaurus)

the other night i was looking up the stars low on the horizon and reading about how they don’t even have ‘traditional’ names because the main western canon of star names are all based on the northern hemisphere’s sky
