He began the conversation with a focus on drugs, so I decided to follow suit. This guy was a talent agent in a Hollywood agency. He lived in LA but frequently traveled to NYC. He took me to his hotel room, which, looking back, was a major red flag. He told me he loved smoking weed and insisted that it had to be with a bong—nothing else would do. I sat there in my winter coat, as the freezing air flowed in from all the open windows, while I watched him take hits from the bong. He then went on to elaborate about his bong rituals. Whenever he flew out of NYC, he would hide his bong and mark the spot on a map, creating a sort of hidden bong treasure map. He never went back for those bongs, always bringing a new one from LA, yet for some reason, he kept track of their locations. He was a truly odd individual, and I never spoke to him again after leaving that room. And no, I did not take a hit from his bong.

On every flight, I sift through the many notes on my phone. My latest journey on JB1773 included: - A mix of forgotten tasks and the names of guys I won't reach out to. - Letters I penned to my best friend during every red-eye flight from national team training in high school, despite knowing I'd see her in just eight hours when I arrived late to class. - A list of trips we planned but will never take (probably for the best). - Kind words from others that they might not remember saying, but I revisit on tough days. - Numerous notes from unexpected work meetings that required me to be on-call like an ER surgeon; reflecting on those moments impresses and inspires me (how did I manage that, and how can I do it again?). - A few Paul Graham quotes he sent me. - A couple of Paul Graham quotes I shared with him. - The opening line of what would be an amazing first draft if only I hadn’t lost focus.
