Those who are inherently stern and unsmiling toward their immediate subordinates often adopt a humble and friendly demeanor when interacting with lower-ranking subordinates.  

In response, these subordinates display exaggerated politeness, continuous smiles, endless handshakes, waves, and even childlike gestures of affection. Yet, as soon as they part ways, the smiles fade, and they disappear back into the ruthless world of power.
