Songwriters, how do you handle this tension when it comes up? What is your decision-making process?

There's often tension between wanting to write a "pop forward song" that lends itself to be more mainstream and sticking to your specific dream for a song. Now that it's out there, I'm glad I made the choice I did. Though it's unique, it holds the depth and emotion I was hoping this song would portray.
