Confusing part about the ongoing they/them pronoun argument is that these were always gender neutral, colloquial terms to discuss persons indirectly; not face-to-face. Even if present for the conversation, they or them is a 3rd person term to address an object of the verb

- β€œthey are nearby,” β€œcan you speak to them?” - and nearly always plural. Otherwise he/him, she/her, that person. I understand misgendering; just not they/them as specifier of a person - they is nearby? What are the options?
