So TIL about ‘dead internet theory,’ which is the theory that the internet is mostly bots, and we’ve spent the last 4+ years not realizing it:

 The things that get to me about dead internet theory:
- it’s basically unfalsifiable (hard to prove right or wrong so it’s perfect for the culture war)
- the article goes into more detail but arguably the cornucopia of content on TikTok suggests that given the cost of making complex whole deepfakes of people, there’s just actually a metric boatload of people connected to the internet
- Reddit in its early days was full of sock puppets 
- one of the cofounders of Reddit’s core theses, web3, stands to build the tools to make those sorts of Sybil eclipse attacks harder to do
