Period pieces = written in your period (time, the present) with too deeply intertwined events to the current period (time)

By abstracting some and using the present period as a sample at most you gain periodic knowledge.

You learn patterns, see patterns, recognize repeating patterns (periodic events)

Its writings that are more abstract if you want to say that. More meta analysis then individual clinical trial (to use a paper analogy)
