The spec according to Soichiro Honda (1956): - Japan’s roads were so bad, the engine had to put out at least 4 hp - make a rugged bike that can deliver easy handling on bad roads - make a bike that anyone can ride, and especially one that makes women feel confident they can ride. So, the engine can’t be concealed

Background / context: - The requirements of this 4-horsepower engine were simply unheard of. - Honda’s previous engine 50cc 2-stroke Cub F auxiliary engine only put out 1 HP. - they’d have to increase power output by 4 times. - in 1956, only 10 percent of Japan’s roads were even paved!
