John Bardeen, William Shockley and Walter Brattain really built on the idea of a vacuum tube transistor. The idea that was a big leap of faith was that they could make a transistor through solid state physics. In order for that, Quantum physics had to be understood to get how semi-conductive materials shared electrons

Pretty cool to note that without that there would also be no Robert Noyce and Jack Kilby who went on to invent the IC (Integrated Circuit) which is what we think of today as chips. Gordon Moore declare's Moore's Law, MOSFETs, LSI/VLSI see adoption, photolithography improves and that leads eventually microprocessors
